Open Enrollment/Intradistrict Transfer Guidelines

OPEN ENROLLMENT/INTRADISTRICT transfer means a student whose parent/guardian resides within the District's boundary of enrollment and wants to attend a different school other than his/her assigned "home" school within the district.

Open Enrollment 2021-2022

January 11- February 12, 2021

Open Enrollment is Huntington Beach Union High School District's (HBUHSD) school of choice program that offers Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and Westminster families the opportunity to attend schools outside of their neighborhood school's attendance boundaries. While every child living within HBUHSD boundaries is guaranteed placement at their school of residence, one campus may have a special program or focus that best meets the needs or interest of an individual student.

The Huntington Beach Union High School District will offer intradistrict/open enrollment to all students entering the ninth through twelfth grades for the 2021-22 school year. All intradistrict/open enrollment transfer applications submitted during January 11 - February 12, 2021, will be treated with equal priority and there are no advantages in turning in the application earlier or later. The application process will be online by visiting my.hbuhsd.edu.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO APPLY IF YOU WISH FOR YOUR STUDENT TO ATTEND THE SCHOOL OF RESIDENCE.

The following conditions also apply to Open Enrollment:

  • Parents must provide transportation.
  • Space must be available at the school of choice.
  • The transition from middle school to high school is not based on a previous/current school of attendance, it is solely based on primary residence address.
  • Once a request is submitted, the parent and student agree to commit to the school of desired attendance for one year.
  • There is no need to reapply if your child is currently on Open Enrollment, a new application is only required if you wish to change schools.
  • You must be pre-enrolled and have a valid HBUHSD student ID number to apply for Open Enrollment
  • Special Education student transfer requests need to have approval from the Executive Director of Special Education.

Incoming 9th grade letters have been mailed to families pre-enrolled for next year. Directions for data confirmation and open enrollment are on the letter. Parents MUST create an Aeries PARENT account at my.hbuhsd.edu and link their students to their Parent Aeries account. Complete a 2021-22 Open Enrollment application on the my.hbuhsd.edu portal from January 11 - February 12.

Families that miss the deadline may participate in a makeup window by completing a paper application between February 22-26.

For Incoming 9th grade families, please note:

Feeder (middle) school attendance does not determine high school attendance. High school students are assigned to one of six comprehensive high schools based on their home residence address.

If you are currently NOT pre-enrolled for any HBUHSD high school for next year, please contact your home school to pre-enroll.
