Interdistrict Transfer Guidelines

The Interdistrict transfer process applies to those parents who wish their children to attend school in a district other than that in which they reside. All Interdistrict requests must be initiated in the district of residence.  An approved interdistrict agreement must be in effect between the district of residence and the school district of desired attendance before a student can attend the desired school.

We are currently accepting Interdistrict Transfer applications for the 2022-2023 school year.

Students who submit paperwork beginning April 18, will be considered for a transfer based on enrollment criteria and availability (HBUHSD Administrative Regulation 5116.2).  HBUHSD will attempt to accommodate a parent request for a particular school, but the request is not guaranteed.

Students that are accepted for an interdistrict transfer will be eligible to attend summer school in 2022. Contact school guidance offices for corresponding registration deadlines. If a student wishes to attend summer school online through Pacific Coast High School, registration must be completed by 3:00 PM on May 19.

If you reside outside the HBUHSD boundaries and wish for your student to be considered for enrollment in one of our six high schools (Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Marina, Westminster, or Ocean View), you must first be released from your district of residence by obtaining an Interdistrict Attendance Agreement

The process to apply for an Interdistrict transfer to the HBUHSD for the 2022-2023 school year requires the submission of an HBUHSD Interdistrict application. The following attachments must be attached to complete your application, missing documents will result in an incomplete application and will not be considered:

  • An approved Interdistrict Attendance Agreement, or approved confirmation email (must include student's name) from the resident district,
  • Most recent transcript or report card,
  • Attendance record,
  • Disciplinary record (if a student does not have a discipline record, documentation must be submitted),
  • Individualized Educational Program (applicable to Special Education students only).*

If you have questions about our Interdistrict transfer policy or about your student’s school placement, please contact our Educational Services Division at (714) 903-7000.
