As the situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) evolves, we want to ensure our HBUHSD Community is up to date with the latest information from the District. It is important to note that this is a fluid situation that continuously provides new facts which requires us to adjust accordingly.

Last night the Board of Trustees discussed the various educational activities and options available to all HBUHSD students. As COVID-19 cases continue to decline and vaccines have become more widely available, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued updated guidance on physical distancing in schools. The language is similar to the new CDC guidance, which advises a minimum of three feet between students instead of six feet. This change in physical distancing guidelines from six feet to three allows us to accommodate more students on campus and offer additional in-person learning opportunities and activities. 

 

Increase of In-Person Learning Opportunities

With the change in physical distancing guidance HBUHSD, will expand in-person classes for the remainder of this school year. Families who wish to have their student return to campus 4-days per week may contact their school site administrator for details.

 

The bell schedules will stay the same for the remainder of the school year. Monday will continue to be virtual for all students and Tuesday through Friday will continue to be in-person teaching and learning days. 

 

In-Person Graduations

We are pleased to announce that graduations will be in-person during the week of June 14 – 18. All graduations will be held in HBUHSD stadiums. To adhere to the CDPH guidance, each graduate will be allocated two tickets. School sites will provide additional details as graduation approaches.

 

Summer School

HBUHSD will offer in-person summer school at all of our comprehensive sites and Valley Vista High School. Classes will run from June 29 – August 6 with HBUHSD classes offered in two 3-week sessions, 4 days a week for 5 hours each day. Each 3-week session will constitute a one semester course. Credit recovery and original credit options will be available. HBUHSD summer school registration information will be available next week.

 

Additional summer school opportunities include: 

 

  • Golden West College will offer various online college credit courses. Registration begins May 12 and classes will run from June 14 - August 20. Classes are free for all HBUHSD students. 
  • OCDE’s Pacific Coast High School will offer various online summer school courses for remediation or original credit. Classes will run from July 1 - August 10. Registration information can be found at pchs.k12.ca.us/july-august-huntington-beach/.

  • OCDE’s Access program will offer in-person summer courses for remediation. Classes will run from June 28 - August 13. 

 

If you are interested in having your student(s) participate in any of the summer options, please contact your school site’s Guidance Department for additional information.

 

2021-22 School Year

We are excited to announce all students will return to full-time in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year. Teachers will no longer teach both in-person students and online students simultaneously. The first day of school is Wednesday, September 1.

 

Families who wish to keep their students virtual during the 2021-22 school year must enroll in Coast High School to attend their 100% online instructional program. Students will use Edgenuity as the primary learning platform and Zoom for live interactions with peers and teachers. Families will receive additional information next week to register for the 100% online instructional program. Students who select to remain 100% online will be transferred to Coast High School for the entire 2021-22 school year and will not be eligible to participate in CIF sports. 

 

We will continue to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students and staff, while adhering to all health and safety guidelines established by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA).

We know this past year has been an incredibly challenging time for the entire HBUHSD community. We want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we have dealt with this unprecedented pandemic. As the first semester comes to a close, we want to remind you that in-person hybrid instruction will resume on Tuesday, February 2.

For students returning to the hybrid model, we will continue to follow the guidance of the CDC, OCHCA, and our school nurses to ensure the health and safety of our staff and students. This includes the requirement to wear a face covering, use hand sanitizer, maintain physical distance, and self-screen for COVID-like symptoms prior to coming to campus.

We will continue to closely monitor local, state and federal public health guidance and data regarding the spread of COVID-19 and make appropriate adjustments as needed. As a reminder, our instructional plan with in-person hybrid learning or 100% online learning allows us to pivot and provide families the flexibility to seamlessly move between the two instructional models without disrupting student schedules.

Now that the stay-at-home order has been lifted, some athletics and co-curricular activities will begin preparing for competitions and performances following the CDPH Youth Sports Guidelines. Athletics and co-curricular competitions between schools permitted during the Purple Tier include: cross country, golf, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and visual performing arts.

It is essential that we all work together to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Our students and staff are important to us as we support health and safety precautions both within and outside of our schools. As a school district, we have been closely monitoring local, state and federal public health guidance and data regarding the spread of COVID-19. With the recent extension of the California stay-at-home order on December 29 and in consultation with the feeder school districts, school nurses, and Dr. Clayton Chau, Director of the Orange County Health Care Agency, the HBUHSD Board of Trustees have voted to temporarily return all HBUHSD students to a 100% distance learning instructional program. This change will take effect beginning January 4 through the end of the first semester on January 29. While in distance learning, all students and instructional staff will participate in daily live instruction, following the same bell schedule we are currently using.

Some athletics, Visual Performing Arts, and other co-curricular activities will continue outdoors and physically distanced. Site principals will be sending out more information in the days ahead regarding school lunches, finals schedules, and second semester activities.

We know the decision to transition to distance learning for all HBUHSD students impacts each family differently.  We also strongly believe that this decision gives us the greatest opportunity for long-term continuity of learning and ensures a safe and healthy learning environment.  We will continue to closely follow the Orange County Health Care Agency, Orange County Department of Education, and California Department of Public Health for updates in our area.

This pandemic continues to provide us all with new challenges.  We are deeply grateful for your patience and support as we work together to keep the health and safety of students and staff our top priority.

Como distrito escolar, hemos estado vigilando de cerca la orientación y los datos locales, estatales y federales de la salud pública con respecto a la propagación de COVID-19. Con la reciente extensión de la orden de estancia en casa de California el 29 de diciembre y en consulta con los distritos escolares de las escuelas intermedias, las enfermeras escolares, y el Dr. Clayton Chau, Director de la Agencia de Atención Médica del Condado de Orange, la Mesa Directiva de HBUHSD ha votado para devolver temporalmente a todos los estudiantes de HBUHSD a un programa de instrucción 100% de aprendizaje a distancia. Este cambio entrará en vigor a partir del 4 de enero hasta el final del primer semestre el 29 de enero. Earlier today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new stay-at-home order for regions of California where hospitals are in danger of being overwhelmed. He further clarified on Twitter that schools that are already open will remain open. In addition to Governor Newsom’s Twitter statement, Orange County Health Officer Dr. Clayton Chau noted that the new order does not apply to school districts and campuses that are already open for in-person learning.

Huntington Beach Union High School District schools will continue to remain open to in-person learning at this time.

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom presented new data regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with dozens of other counties, Governor Newsom placed Orange County back into the state’s most restrictive "purple tier" due to an increase in the local widespread transmission of COVID-19.

Under state guidelines, if a county falls back into the purple tier from a less restrictive tier, schools that have resumed in-person instruction are allowed to remain open with the necessary state and local guidance in place. Dr. Clayton Chau, Director of the Orange County Health Care Agency, stated, "K-12 schools that have fully reopened prior to today for in-person instruction are not required to close."

As such, all HBUHSD campuses will remain open for hybrid instruction with a continued commitment to the safety of our students and staff. 

Since we have already resumed in-person instruction, in order for a school or the district to close per the California Department of Public Health, the following criteria must be met: 

  • A school experiences a 5% positive testing rate of both students and staff within a 14-day period
  • 25% or more of schools in the district have closed due to COVID-19 within 14 days

 

It is important to keep in mind that this guidance is subject to change based on future state directives from Governor Newsom. All school closures will be in consultation with the Orange County Health Care Agency.

As a reminder, here are some steps that our community can take to slow the spread of COVID-19 according to the Orange County Health Care Agency:

  • Get tested for COVID-19
  • Stay home if you do not feel well
  • Avoid crowds and maintain a physical distance of 6 feet apart from people not in your household
  • Wear a face covering
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

 

Lastly, the district continues to appreciate our families’ efforts to screen their students for symptoms of COVID-19 at home each day before arriving on campus. This shared responsibility is critical to our ability to keep our schools open for in-person hybrid learning.

Hoy, el gobernador Gavin Newsom presentó nuevos datos sobre la pandemia COVID-19. Junto con docenas de otros condados, el gobernador Newson colocó al Condado de Orange de nuevo en el ‘nivel morado’ más restrictivo del estado debido a un aumento en la transmisión local extensa del COVID-19.

Según las guías estatales, si un condado vuelve al nivel morado de un nivel menos restrictivo, las escuelas que han continuado la enseñanza en persona pueden permanecer abiertas con la orientación local y estatal necesaria. The Huntington Beach Union High School District welcomed more students and staff back to campuses for in-person instruction on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Students have been divided into cohorts 1 and 2; cohort 1 is learning in person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while cohort 2 is learning in person on Thursdays and Fridays. On Monday, when the cohorts are not on campus, they are working remotely while the campuses are thoroughly cleaned in addition to the daily cleaning after each school day. 

"On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am very encouraged and grateful for our first week of HBUHSD hybrid learning,” said Board President Susan Henry. "I’m encouraged by the progress we have made and thankful for the patience, preparation, coordination and care for our students, by all concerned, as we made this transition. Thank you to those who have worked so hard with us as we look forward to next steps."

Within the district, 55% of students elected to return to school under the hybrid model while approximately 25% of the teaching force opted to remain online. The district hired more than 100 substitute teachers and is actively recruiting more. While parents have a choice whether their children can learn in a hybrid setting or 100% online, some teachers have also been given the option to telework in lieu of taking family and medical leave for reasons related to COVID-19. 

"One of the challenges we are up against is the way federal, state, and local employee leaves of absences have been designed," said Deputy Superintendent Carolee Ogata.

Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), employees may take an additional 10 weeks of paid extended family and medical leave for reasons related to COVID-19. Qualified reasons for leave include self-quarantine advisement from a health care provider, symptoms of any other substantially-similar condition specified by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, or caring for a child whose school or child care facility is closed due to COVID-19. The FFCRA expires on December 31, 2020.

"By giving teachers the option to provide instruction remotely, the district is able to keep the content in the classroom for specific areas that are difficult to find substitute teachers; such as world languages, mathematics, or sciences," Ogata said. 

Owen Crosby, Assistant Superintendent of Education, agreed.

"While no hybrid/cohort model is perfect, the district intentionally designed a model that would give every student access to all their classes and current teachers, who are trained content experts," Crosby said.

In preparation for the return of students and staff to campuses, the district adapted to meet the safety requirements of the federal, state, and local agencies. For example, school sites are increasing the cleaning of classrooms and high traffic areas, requiring masks, providing hand sanitizers, and installing portable hand washing stations. New signage has also been posted around campuses and in classrooms to promote physical distancing. 

In addition, the $11 million dollars awarded to the district through the Learning Loss Mitigation Funds (CARES Act) provided updated technology, additional staffing and substitute teachers, and personal protective equipment including:

  • Masks: 259,722

  • Nurse Booties: 9,000
  • Upgraded Air Filters: 5,700
  • Nurse Caps: 5,200

Superintendent Clint Harwick praised staff for their hard work during one of the most challenging times in education. 

"Our staff has done an outstanding job redesigning classrooms while continuing to provide high-quality instruction and support services in a completely new environment in the midst of a global pandemic," Harwick said.

As our schools refine the safety and scheduling issues that the coronavirus has caused, we are reaching out to assure and inform you that we are working to deliver the best educational services we can provide under the most challenging circumstances. On October 6, after months of preparation and purchases of safety equipment, students and staff of selected special education programs successfully and safely returned to in-person instruction. It’s been great to see the smiles on the students’ faces as they interacted with their peers after being apart for seven months. On November 3, we will transition to our next phase of in-person instruction utilizing a hybrid model for students and staff returning to campus.

For students who opted to remain 100% online, we are addressing the daily challenges that a new system presents, and deeply appreciate the efforts our teachers have made to deliver education in this mode. Some are learning new technology skills while others have taken advantage of the equipment and software purchased for staff and students through the Learning Loss Mitigation Funds (CARES Act). To date we have purchased 3,800 Chromebooks, 700 Mac/PCs, iPads, webcams, wireless headsets, and upgraded software including Zoom, Google Meets, 24/7 online tutoring, CommonLit and other platforms for classroom use. We are committed to improving our skills and strategies in the new online environment, so please continue to keep your school principal informed if you have any questions or concerns.

For students returning to the hybrid model, we want to inform you of what we are doing to ensure the health and safety of our staff and students when on campus. Students and staff will be required to wear masks, use hand sanitizer and maintain physical distance. We are also making changes to the way our physical classrooms will be adapted to meet the safety requirements of the federal, state, and local agencies, including spacing desks, adding teacher shields, and upgrading air filters. Through the Learning Loss Mitigation Funds (CARES Act), we were able to purchase personal protective equipment including:

We are working diligently to staff the classrooms while accommodating teachers who have opted to stay home for health reasons. We have hired partner teachers and support staff to collaboratively work with content specific teachers who need to remain online. These instructional teams will ensure our teachers continue instructing their students whether the teacher, student, or both choose to be in the classroom or remain online. 

Our instructional plan with 100% online or Hybrid learning incorporates the following components:

  • Gives all students the opportunity to receive instruction from teachers from their home school
  • Allows all students the chance to take any course the school offers
  • Provides families the flexibility to select 100% online or return to campus two days a week and still receive the same instruction from the same teacher
  • Allows students to move from 100% online model to the hybrid model (or vice versa) seamlessly without a disruption to their learning

As we work on plans to bring students back to campus, we are continually adjusting to insure student and staff safety. Over the past 6 months, we have all learned to prepare for ongoing adjustments caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. 

As previously communicated, students with moderate to severe disabilities will return to school the week of October 5. All students will continue to be online on Mondays, while in-person instruction will take place Tuesday through Friday. All programs will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily.

Mondays will continue to be an online day to allow staff to deep clean classrooms to insure proper sanitization of school spaces. Your student’s case manager will contact you with further details regarding your student’s schedule. 

As we begin our re-entry to school, students will be using the following bell schedule:

HBUHSD is focused on delivering a high-quality education that puts our students and staff's health, safety, social-emotional, and academic well-being first. We have been striving to provide an education that creates a new standard of excellence for learning from any location.

Over the last several weeks, we have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 data in Orange County. During this period, our teachers have been hard at work delivering instruction digitally and many have returned to their on-campus classrooms. Site support staff have also returned on-campus to prepare for the reopening of schools. Custodial, maintenance, and grounds staff have been sanitizing, cleaning, and beautifying our campuses and parking lots. Bus drivers have been delivering hotspots to students who do not have network connectivity. Food Services has been providing nutritious meals to all children. In addition, athletic coaches and co-curricular staff have been working with students in outdoor environments under the current California Department of Public Health - Industry Guidance for Schools and Schools-Based Program.

Per the August 28 state mandate, schools cannot reopen for in-person instruction until the county has been in the Substantial (Red) Tier for 14 consecutive days. Currently, as we approach the end of the 14-day threshold, with the decline of COVID-19 cases in the county, HBUHSD is prepared to begin the transition to the in-person instructional hybrid model.

Please know that our dates are based upon current information and the complexities of reopening high schools. The decision to stagger the reopening dates will allow us to provide additional resources during each reopening week, ensuring a more successful transition from virtual to in-person learning.

In agreement with the HBUHSD Educators Association:

  • Students with moderate to severe disabilities in the following programs: Endeavors, IDEAS, Pathways, Special Abilities Cluster (SAC), and VOICES will begin in-person instruction on Monday, October 5 with full support services. As a result, Special Education teachers, instructional assistants, support staff, and bus drivers will resume traditional duties of transporting, educating, and caring for our students in-person and on-campus. Students who have selected the online only option will continue their education in a digital format.

  • General education students and the staff who selected the hybrid instructional model will begin in-person and on-campus instruction on Tuesday, November 3, the start of the 2nd quarter. Students who have selected the online only option will continue their education in a digital format.

As we reopen school to on-campus instruction, the health and safety of students and staff is a top priority. The HBUHSD’s 2020-21 School Opening & Safety Plan incorporates schedules, recommendations, and guidance from our school nurses, national, state, and local agencies. Over the next few days, site administration will provide additional details on the reopening of individual school sites and the protocols necessary to keep students and staff safe.

Dear HBUHSD Families,

Thank you for completing our 2020-21 Instructional Program Registration. We had 63% of respondents enroll their student(s) in the Hybrid Model and 37% of respondents select the 100% online model. However, as a reminder, all students will begin the school year online starting Wednesday, September 2, 2020 and remain online until state health care agencies, local health care agencies, and school health care providers determine it is appropriate to return to a hybrid model. We will be working with our teachers, administrations, and classified staff to determine the best day to return to campus. In addition, once we decide to return to campuses, we will communicate with no less than 2 weeks notice so staff and families can prepare for the transition. We will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 in our local communities while keeping students and staff safety our highest priority.

Whether you selected the 100% online model or the hybrid model, all students will remain enrolled in their current school and students will remain with their assigned teachers from their school of attendance for the entire year.  By keeping all students at their home sites, students will maintain access to teachers and courses offered at their school.  Additionally, it allows students to take zero period courses and participate in co-curricular activities.

Students who selected the 100% online model will remain home and participate in daily instructional activities and complete assignments virtually through online tools. Their teachers will utilize online technology to deliver instruction. Students will be required to login to each period daily with their teachers and classmates. 

Getting Ready for the First Day of School

  • Students will have access to their class schedule after 12:00 p.m. on August 31. Please check your student’s HBUHSD email account for a Welcome Letter that contains your schedule. To find the links to join your virtual class in Aeries, go to my.hbuhsd.edu, locate the Aeries SIS icon under the Parents and Students heading. Sign-in to Aeries by using your district-assigned email and unique password. If this is your first time logging in, your password is your VPC code located in your Welcome Letter. Please login to Aeries prior to September 1 to access your class schedule.

  • As we have seen recently, students and staff in local districts have experienced connectivity issues on their first school day. The following exercise will provide HBUHSD students and staff an opportunity to test network connectivity prior to the first day of school. Please follow the directions below:  

    • On September 1, at 11:30 a.m., using your school-issued Chromebook, all students will be requested to practice logging into Aeries to access their class schedule and join a class session. To do so, login to Aeries. Located in the Class Summary section is your current class schedule. In the Meeting column, click on the "Join" button associated with your second period class. Join your class session and say "Hi" to your teacher and classmates. If you have any difficulties, please go to my.hbuhsd.edu and click on the ‘Aeries Sign Up Guide for Parents and Students’ under the ‘Helpful Info’ section. After utilizing the troubleshooting guide, if you are still having difficulty, call your school. 

Technical Support

  • For technical support or assistance, please visit https://s.hbuhsd.edu/StuHelp and we will respond to all requests as soon as possible.

  • Hot spots will be available for students who do not have access to online connectivity.  Please contact your school site for a request form.

  • For immediate assistance, please call your school site.

Grades and Attendance

  • Attendance will be taken daily, each period, for all students.

  • Traditional grading practices and report cards will be used for all students. Teachers will inform students and parents/guardians on how academic performance will be evaluated.

Student Services

  • Teachers and staff will be available daily in order to provide support to students.

  • Live tutoring support will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through an outside contracted agency.  A link to the service will be provided to students once school begins.

  • Schools will provide the accommodations necessary to serve students with special needs, to the extent practical.

  • Support staff will be available to assist students with social emotional needs.  Please call your school site during school hours for immediate assistance.

  1. How do I change the instructional program model that I previously registered for?
    Instructional Program Registration closes on Monday, August 17. Up until then, families can resubmit a new registration form with their new preference.

  2. Will AP classes be available in both hybrid and 100% virtual models?
    Most classes will be offered in both hybrid and 100% virtual models, including AP courses.

  3. Can students take zero period classes?
    Yes, students will have the opportunity to take the zero period classes offered at the site.

  4. Will lunch be offered?
    Yes, Grab and Go lunches will be offered.

  5. Will a student’s instructional program choice affect their ability or eligibility to participate in co-curricular activities (i.e. athletics, performing arts, APA, etc.)?
    No, a student’s instructional program choice will not affect their ability or eligibility to participate in co-curricular activities. All students will have the opportunity to participate in co-curricular activities.

  6. When the district is cleared for hybrid in-person instruction, will students registered for the hybrid model be able to switch to the 100% virtual model if they are not comfortable with returning to school? If not, will students be penalized if they do not physically attend?
    To ensure continuity of learning for students, any changes to the Instructional Program will occur at the semester. Students will not be penalized if they do not physically attend, but continue to actively participate in classroom activities online.

  7. What will the hybrid schedule look like?
    Students selecting the hybrid model will be placed in one of two groups, Group A or Group B. When possible to return to campus, each group will attend in-person instruction two times per week. The other three days will be online. One example could be:
    • Monday: All students attend classes online*
    • Tuesday: Group A (in-person instruction) and Group B (online instruction)
    • Wednesday: Group B (in-person instruction) and Group A (online instruction)
    • Thursday: Group A (in-person instruction) and Group B (online instruction)
    • Friday: Group B (in-person instruction) and Group A (online instruction)

    *School sites will determine their online day.

  8. How many students will be in the hybrid in-person classes?
    For most in-person classes, there will be approximately 18 students per class. Physical Education and Performing Arts classes may have more students.

  9. Will face coverings be provided to students who do not have one?
    Per California Department of Public Health guidelines, students who are not exempt from wearing face coverings must wear a face covering while on campus, entering and leaving campus, and riding the school bus. Students may bring their own face covering or one will be provided to them.

  7. Thời khóa biểu cho kiểu mẫu hỗn hợp sẽ ra sao?
    Các học sinh mà chọn kiểu mẫu hỗn hợp sẽ được cho vào một trong hai nhóm, Nhóm A và Nhóm B. Khi nào mà có thể quay trở lại trường, thì mỗi nhóm sẽ đến dự lớp hai lần mỗi tuần. Ba ngày kia sẽ học trên mạng. Một thí dụ là:
    • Thứ Hai: Tất cả các học sinh đều học trên mạng*
    • Thứ Ba: Nhóm A (giảng huấn có mặt tại lớp) và Nhóm B (giảng huấn trên mạng)
    • Thứ Tư: Nhóm B (giảng huấn có mặt tại lớp) và Nhóm A (giảng huấn trên mạng)
    • Thứ Năm: Nhóm A (giảng huấn có mặt tại lớp) và Nhóm B (giảng huấn trên mạng)
    • Thứ Sáu: Nhóm B (giảng huấn có mặt tại lớp) và Nhóm A (giảng huấn trên mạng)

    *Các trường sẽ xác định ngày mà họ dạy trên mạng.

  8. Có bao nhiêu học sinh trong các lớp hỗn hợp với sự hiện diện của học sinh?
    Phần lớn các lớp với học sinh hiện diện, sẽ có khoảng 20 học sinh cho mỗi lớp. Các lớp Thể dục và Nghệ thuật Diễn xuất có thể có nhiều học sinh hơn.

  9. Khẩu trang có được cung cấp cho học sinh mà không có hay không?
    Chiếu theo các hướng dẫn của Bộ Y tế Công cộng của California, học sinh nào mà không được miễn mang khẩu trang thì phải mang khẩu trang khi ở trên khuôn viên trường, đi vào và đi ra khỏi trường, và khi đi xe buýt của trường. Học sinh có thể mang khẩu trang của mình đến trường hay sẽ được cung cấp khẩu trang ở trường.

Dear HBUHSD Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we prepare for the 2020-21 school year.

When we closed our schools on March 13, we had hoped that we would be able to return to school within a few weeks. Unfortunately, that was not the case. In fact, based on the Governor’s most recent criteria for reopening schools, all students will be starting school 100% online. In preparation for when it's safe to do so, we're offering an option for parents to select a hybrid instructional model with blended online and on-campus instruction.

Throughout the summer we conducted collaborative meetings and administered surveys with the primary goal being the health and safety of our students and staff while providing the best possible educational experience for students. We collected input from our Reopening Task Force that included over 90 teachers, nurses, psychologists, and administrators. Safety protocols were examined with our site nursing staff. In addition, parent and student surveys gathered informative input.

Our efforts also included outreach to colleagues in Orange County, throughout California, and across the nation to collaborate, learn, and share ideas. National, state, and local agencies provided on-going guidance that continuously informed our planning.

We focused on developing two different instructional models based on the latest guidelines and the input collected over the summer. This input included 86.7% of our surveyed families who wanted either a return to full on-campus instruction or a hybrid model. As a result, HBUHSD will be offering a 100% online instructional model and, when safe to do so, a hybrid instructional model.

Each family will need to complete the following Instructional Program Registration form for each student enrolled in our District. Once your preferred Instructional Program is selected, your student(s) will be scheduled into the Instructional Program you selected for the fall semester. To ensure continuity of learning for students, any changes to the Instructional Program will occur at the semester. Families have until Monday, August 17, to register your student(s) for the Instructional Program of your choice. Students who do not register by August 17, will be assigned to the Hybrid Instructional Model.

Please take a few minutes to complete this Instructional Program Registration form by Monday, August 17, 2020.

The emergency grading system follows a "Do No Harm" policy which allows seniors to graduate and provides underclassmen an opportunity to begin the 2020-21 school year with a fresh start that will not be tied to the unmitigated challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On April 1, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom and Orange County Department of Education Superintendent Al Mijares recommended keeping campuses closed to students for the remainder of the school year due to safety concerns related to COVID-19 (click to read Superintendent Mijares’ statement).  In response to these statements, and in consensus with our Board of Trustees and feeder school districts, it was determined that the best course of action was to close the school campuses for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year.  Although school campuses will be closed to the public, online learning will continue through the last day of instruction, June 11, 2020.  Also note the entire school district will be closed for the scheduled Spring Break, April 13-17, 2020.

 

It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge that the end of the school year will not look like what we had imagined back in September.  Our high school seniors and retiring colleagues thought they had one last semester to enjoy senior events, to say goodbye, and to experience some of their favorite activities one last time.  We realize this means we will no longer hold culminating activities in our traditional format, such as prom, senior week, and even graduation as we once knew. We are working on alternative ways to celebrate your accomplishments.  It is difficult to think that we can no longer hug our friends and gather in crowds at sporting events or performing arts; however, we make these social distancing sacrifices to save lives. The 2019-2020 school year will be remembered for many things.  We hope it is remembered for a time when we came together during difficult circumstances to place “family first, others first.”

The Huntington Beach Union High School District is aware of the statement made moments ago by California Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. They have directed school districts to close campuses for the remainder of the school year.

The District will provide an update regarding school closures in HBUHSD tomorrow to families and staff through our regular communication channels, including social media. Thank you for your continued patience and support during this time.

Huntington Beach Union High School District schools will be extending the closure of schools through Friday, May 1, 2020. We will evaluate this fluid situation in the coming weeks and make adjustments as necessary.

 

We are aware that students, parents, and educators continue to be concerned about a lack of statewide grading and credit requirements. There is an expectation that the Governor and/or the State Superintendent of Public Instruction may address this issue in the coming weeks. In the interim, teachers will resume grading while awaiting further direction from state agencies.

In response to the Governor's March 17, 2020 press conference and conference calls with school district leaders, the Board of Trustees held an emergency board meeting to discuss the extended closure of our schools and caring for our staff and students during this unprecedented and challenging time.

 

Huntington Beach Union High School District schools will be closed through Friday, April 17, 2020. We will evaluate this fluid situation in the coming weeks and extend the closure if necessary.

 

During this period, we will provide grab and go lunches to students from all school sites. Distribution sites will be at Westminster and Ocean View High Schools Monday through Friday from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm.

Today, the Board of Trustees voted to close schools effective March 16, 2020, through March 27, 2020. This decision is being made in response to the National Emergency declared by the President of the United States. The purpose of this closure is to limit the spread of the COVID-19 global pandemic.
