Brian F. Garland Library Dedication at Edison High School

For 30 years, Garland worked as a teacher, counselor and administrator at Edison High School and was described to truly love his job and doing anything he could to help kids. He also served on the HBUHSD Board of Trustees. Garland unfortunately passed away in March 2013.

At the dedication ceremony, EHS Principal, D’liese Melendrez began with introductions of the many HBUHSD personnel in attendance including Superintendent Greg Plutko, Board of Trustees members, Superintendent’s cabinet members, former superintendents, former district employees and personnel from other school district’s. Elaine Garland, Brian’s wife and many of their family members were also present at the ceremony.

President of the Board of Trustees, Susan Henry, Superintendent Plutko, former EHS teacher and friend, Michael Shimpock and Mrs. Garland all took turns speaking to the crowd and recalling memories with Garland. It was obvious from their speeches and the massive crowd in attendance, that he was truly an adored man and educator.

Following the speeches, President Henry, Superintendent Plutko, Mrs. Garland and Principal Melendrez revealed the plaque designating the EHS library as the new Brian F. Garland Library.

Along with a picture of Mr. Garland, the plaque stated, “Brian F. Garland, a man of integrity and compassion was dedicated to all Charger students as well as the entire Edison community. Mr. Garland was a former Edison High School Teacher and Principal, and a Huntington Beach Union High School District Trustee.”

Following the ceremony, refreshments were served inside of the newly dedicated building. A corner of the library was also reserved as a tribute to Garland and his work at EHS. The quiet sitting area contained personal pictures and books of Garland’s for student and community enjoyment. Above the sitting area read Garland’s favorite quote: “It’s not what he gains that measures the worth of a man – but what he gives.”

Brian Garland’s impact on Edison High School and the Huntington Beach Union High School District will now always be remembered with the comfort and resourcefulness of the library.
