Dr. Carolee Ogata Selected as the Next Superintendent of the Huntington Beach Union High School District

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Carolee Ogata as the sole candidate for Superintendent of Schools, pending contract negotiations and a formal appointment at the May 14, 2024, board meeting. She will succeed Superintendent Dr. Clint Harwick, effective September 1, 2024, who is retiring after seven years of exemplary service in the role. 

As HBUHSD’s Deputy Superintendent of Human Resources since 2012, Dr. Ogata has played a pivotal role in shaping the culture and educational excellence of the district, while serving students and staff alongside Superintendent Dr. Harwick. Her unwavering support for student success has been apparent throughout her tenure at HBUHSD through the growth and development of Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) programs, the Giving Farm, student and staff well spaces, Unified Sports and Arts, and the expansion of girls’ sports offerings through beach volleyball and flag football. Additionally, Dr. Ogata’s compassionate nature and steadfast leadership fosters a positive work environment where HBUHSD staff are supported and encouraged to explore their passions and seek opportunities for professional growth.

With over 32 years of experience in education and a rich background encompassing various positions including teacher, assistant principal, principal, Director of Instruction, and Director of Personnel, Dr. Ogata truly understands the vital role each member plays in operating a successful school district. Her passion for advancing educational programs and empowering students and educators has been a driving force that inspired her to become an innovative leader in education. 

Dr. Ogata earned her Bachelor of Arts in English/Speech from California State University, Long Beach, followed by a Master of Science in Education Administration from National University, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California.

Throughout her career, Dr. Ogata has garnered various accolades, including Teacher of the Year and the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 17 Administrator of the Year in Human Resources, underscoring her exceptional leadership and dedication to education.
