Huntington Beach Adult School Offers Free Medical Assistant Training for English Learners

In collaboration with Memorial Care, the Huntington Beach Adult School (HBAS) will offer a free Medical Assistant Program for students whose first language is not English.*

This program is the latest initiative made possible through HBAS’s close partnerships with local employers, and classes will begin on March 5, 2024.

“We have made efforts to support English learners in our career training courses before,” shared HBAS Principal Steve Curiel, “but we are really excited about this new opportunity, which is specifically designed for English learners who would like to be medical assistants.”

HBAS Assistant Principal Phil Villamor added, “Supporting English learners in all of our programs (including ASE [Adult Secondary Education] and CTE [Career Technical Education]) is an action step selected by HBAS staff as part of our latest WASC review process.”

This action step is a continuation of the school’s focus on helping students embark on new educational pathways, at HBAS and beyond. Throughout the program, HBAS will provide students with an English as a Second Language (ESL) support instructor and access to an online program that allows every student to practice using English in the context of medical assisting.

Memorial Care will recruit students from the front offices of their own clinics, which will fill up to one-half of the openings, while other interested applicants in our community will fill the remaining spots.

Those interested in joining this program can fill out an online interest form. Simply visit www.hbas.edu/ma-esl. If you have difficulty accessing the interest form or have any questions about the program, please call 714-894-1018.

*Prior to enrollment, applicants must complete a Minimum English Proficiency Level Assessment.
