California Healthy Youth Act (AB 329)

California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act (AB 329), requires that comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to students once in high school.

Instruction must encourage students to communicate with parents, guardians or other trusted adults about human sexuality. Instruction must be medically accurate, age-appropriate and inclusive of all students. Comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education include the following topics:

Information about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including transmission, Food Drug Administration (FDA) approved methods to prevent HIV and STIs, and treatment.
Information that abstinence is the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and HIV and other STIs, and information about the value of delaying sexual activity.
Discussion about social views of HIV and AIDs.
Information about accessing resources for sexual and reproductive health care.
Information about pregnancy, including FDA approved prevention methods, pregnancy outcomes, prenatal care, and the newborn safe surrender law.
Information about sexual orientation and gender, including the harm of negative stereotypes.
Information about healthy relationships and avoiding unhealthy behaviors and situations.

Huntington Beach Union High School District trained instructors will be providing health and science instruction for 9th grade health classes. You can examine the instructional materials at your student school location. If you have questions, please see the Health Science teacher or Principal. You may request a copy of the California Healthy Youth Act (California Education Code 51930-51939) by contacting the Huntington Beach Union High School District, Curriculum and Instruction Office at 714-903-7000 extension 50421.

State law allows you (parent / guardian) to remove your student from this instruction. If you do not want your student to participate in comprehensive sexual health or HIV prevention education, please give a written request to your student's Health Science teacher. Please note that this exemption does NOT include topics on gender, sexual orientation, negative harm of gender stereotypes, healthy relationships and avoiding unhealthy behavior and situations.

An alternative assignment will be assigned to your student. In your letter and/or email to the Health Science teacher, please indicate the following Health Science topics that you want your student not to participate in the District Health Science Course.
