Westminster decathletes earn top spot and improved state ranking

Lead by coaches Eric Brothwell and Elaine Lanz, the decathletes traveled to Sacramento, CA to compete against other teams in the subjects of Art, Economics, Music, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. All competitions were pertaining to the 2016 theme of India.

In addition to the first place title, the team of eight was able to accumulate 11 individual medals -- five gold, three silver, and three bronze. Team member, Javier Cruz, 11, was also honored as best in the Division 3 Varsity (2.99 GPA or below) category.  With this victory, the team also increased their overall state ranking to 34th.

This trip marks the tenth consecutive year that the Westminster Academic Decathlon team has advanced to the State Championship competition.  The Lions are only team in Orange County to have had that consistency throughout the last 17 years.

With a large number of their decathletes returning next year, the Lions hope to even further improve their performance as they face the 2017 theme of World War II.
