Huntington Beach Union High School District

Dangers of under the influence and distracted driving displayed at Edison

***THIS IS A RE-ENACTMENT.

In conjunction with Huntington Beach Police Department, Huntington Beach Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Knott's Berry Farm, the California Office of Traffic Safety, and many more, a DUI/distracted driving car crash re-enactment was displayed on the streets of Hamilton Avenue and Polynesian Lane on the south side of campus.

Students from different groups on campus participated in the car crash re-enactment and acting as "the walking dead." For instance, every fifteen minutes throughout the school day, a gong sounded over the loud speaker meaning one student was taken out of his/her class to symbolize their "passing away" in a DUI/distracted related incident.

On Mar. 24, the day after the car crash, Edison held an assembly to "mourn" those that had passed and further discuss the potential ramifications of driving under the influence and/or distracted.

The Mayor of Huntington Beach, Jim Katapodis, lead the assembly. Additionally, Edison Assistant Principal, Jennifer Graves, addressed the crowd with her own personal horror story involving a drunk driver. Both a student involved in the program, and a parent with a student involved in the program additionally spoke to the crowd about their "losses." To end the assembly, Captain David Bunetta of the HBPD gave one last reminder about not driving under the influence.

Every year, the HBPD Every Fifteen Minutes program rotates between one of four HBUHSD high schools -- Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina, Ocean View. Next year, the program will take place at Huntington Beach High School.

A special thanks to Promoting Resources in Drug Education, Inc., Huntington Beach Police Department, Huntington Beach Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Knott's Berry Farm, and the many other organizations and individuals that made this eye-opening event possible for the students of Edison High School.
